Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Title VII)

A federal law prohibiting employment discrimination against employees and applicants based on:
  • Race.
  • Color.
  • Religion.
  • Sex (including gender, pregnancy, sexual orientation, and gender identity).
  • National origin.
Title VII specifically prohibits discrimination in the terms and conditions of employment, including hiring, compensation, employment benefits, advancement, employment training, assignments, and termination of employment. Title VII applies to private, state government, and local government employers that employ 15 or more employees. Title VII also applies to federal government employees and applicants for federal employment.
A bona fide occupational qualification is an limited exception to Title VII allowing discrimination based on sex, religion, or national origin.
Title VII is enforced by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
