This practice note considers the circumstances in which an employer might need to obtain a medical report on employees or workers and the steps that an employer must take when requesting a medical report (whether from a general practitioner, a specialist consultant, a company doctor or an occupational health specialist). It considers the impact of the Access to Medical Reports Act 1988, data protection legislation and the use of medical reports in tribunal proceedings.
