The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) have released the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
On January 7, 2016, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The guidelines are designed to help ensure the public consumes a healthy, nutritionally adequate diet.
Under the 1990 National Nutrition Monitoring and Related Research Act, every five years the HHS and USDA must jointly publish a report that contains nutritional and dietary information and guidelines for the general public. The guidelines must be based on the scientific and medical knowledge available.
The new guide outlines five overarching guidelines:
  • Follow a healthy eating pattern across the lifespan.
  • Focus on variety, nutrient density, and amount.
  • Limit calories from added sugars and saturated fats and reduce sodium intake.
  • Shift to healthier food and beverage choices.
  • Support healthy eating patterns for all.
