A summary of the legal and licensing requirements on decommissioning a nuclear power plant, which is different for existing (commissioned before 2008) and new stations (commissioned after 2008). The note considers the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority's strategy for decommissioning, delicensing existing sites, the Nuclear Reactors (Environmental Impact Assessment for Decommissioning) Regulations 1999 (SI 1999/2892) and the Funded Decommissioning Programme for new nuclear power stations.
