Smart meter

An advanced meter that records electricity consumption at regular intervals and communicates that information back to the electricity supplier for monitoring and billing purposes. Smart meters can potentially be used to incentivise customers to use energy away from peak times to help reduce pressure on the system as a whole and take advantage of lower price periods. Smart meters are also used for measuring gas consumption. For more information, see Practice note, Smart energy systems: overview.
