Bonneville Power Administration (BPA)

Established in 1937, a federal agency within the Department of Energy based in the Pacific Northwest that, among other things:
  • Sells wholesale electricity from 31 federal hydro projects in the Columbia River Basin, one non-federal nuclear plant and several other small non-federal power plants to public and privately-owned utilities. The BPA is one of four federal power marketers and the largest supplier of electricity in the Northwest.
  • Provides transmission services to utilities and independent power producers. As a federally regulated transmission provider, the BPA must provide transmission services on an open and non-discriminatory basis.
  • Operates and maintains the majority of the high voltage transmission lines in its territory to ensure the reliability and efficiency of the transmission grid.
About one-third of the electricity used in the Northwest comes from BPA.
