Labor and employment attorneys provide valuable advice and counsel to their clients on everything from hiring to firing employees. Plaintiffs' attorneys also advise and counsel their clients on how to protect their rights under the federal antidiscrimination laws. Equally important, however, are the skills and best practices acquired in litigating employment discrimination cases.
The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission's fiscal year ends on September 30 and the late summer months mark a flurry of EEOC-initiated lawsuits. Many of these cases fall within the priorities in the EEOC's Strategic Enforcement Plan. In addition, according to the EEOC's Charge Statistics, private sector employees filed 93,272 charges of discrimination with the agency in FY 2013. This was below the record number of charges filed in FY 2011, but still one of the top five busiest fiscal years in the agency's current statistical record.
