Wind Power Class

A system designed to rate the quality of the wind resource (the wind energy available for electricity generation based on historical wind data, topographical features, and other parameters) in an area, which takes into account the average annual wind speed and wind density. The Department of Energy rates wind quality from 1 to 7 with 1 being the poorest wind energy resources and 7 representing exceptional wind energy resources. Class 3 is typically the minimum required for utility-scale or commercial wind development.
